Donald E. Wilkerson, 92, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Thorton Terrace Health Campus in Hanover, Indiana. He was born on January 24, 1931, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the son of the late William T. Wilkerson and Louise (Brockmeyer) Wilkerson. After graduating high school, Don joined the United States Army. He was based in Fort Knox, Kentucky for his basic training and Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas for surgical training. During his time in the Army, he was stationed in Austria and Bad Kranknack, Germany and also went to School for Radiology in Munich, Germany. After his military career, Don was the second person hired at Scott Memorial Hospital to get facility opened, then went on to become Chief of Radiology and Laboratory departments, where he worked for 31 years before retiring. Throughout life Don was very involved with his community. He served on the Scott County Area Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals, served two years as Scottsburg City Councilman, was the past president of the Scott County Chamber of Commerce, he was on the Board of Directors at LifeSpring, and served as a deputy reserve for the Scott County Sheriff's Department. In 2002 and 2010, Don was a nominee for the "Good Neighbor Award" and was presented the "Outstanding Citizens Award" by Mayor Blake Burns. He was a former member of the Scottsburg First Presbyterian Church and current member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Scottsburg, Indiana. Don loved to travel; he visited 47 states throughout his life. He enjoyed having breakfast with his son-in-law, Thomas. On September 10, 1955, he married Janet J. (Lamb) Wilkerson, and she preceded him in death in 2021. He was also preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gordon Wilkerson; and one sister, Gloria Conner. Survivors include his daughter, Debra (Thomas) Garrett of Madison, Indiana; and brother, Harold (Jean) Wilkerson of Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Jaclyn (Josiah) Tweedy of Shelbyville, Indiana and Andrew (Sidney) Garrett of Milan, Indiana; and seven great grandchildren, Madelynn, Nathan, Samuel, Silas and Kinlee Tweedy, Gracelynn and Easton Garrett. Funeral Service: 11:00 am Monday, October 2, 2023, at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana with Pastor Kevin Sills officiating.
