Obituary

Dwayne Ferrell, 86, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on October 15, 1934 in Mooresville, Indiana, the son of the late Steve "Hickory" and Ella E. Ferrell. A 1952 graduate of Austin High School, he also attended Franklin College, Cincinnati Bible Seminary and graduated from Indiana University School of Real Estate. He worked as a sign painter and draftsman at Jess Neon Signs then entered the U.S. Army in 1957. In 1959, he married Virginia Kay Watterson. He then went to work as an assistant civil engineer for the Indiana State Highway Department building the interstate highway system. He worked for 2 local banks for 10 years and became fully licensed in Insurance and Real Estate. He retired, after 20 years with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles as a supervisor. Dwayne was a member of the Scottsburg First Christian Church and was previously an elder and chairman of the board at Austin Christian Church. He served as the president of Kiwanis, secretary/treasurer of March of Dimes, president, and coach of Scottsburg Little League. For many years, he held the title of Vienna Township Trustee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Kay Ferrell. Survivors include, three sons, Russell (Sandra) Ferrell, Michael Ferrell (Charlotte Moreau), and Daren Ferrell; daughter, Leslie (Tom) Flechler; seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Justin, Adam, Abbie, Mason, Katelyn, and Lindsay; and six great grandchildren, Thomas, William, Jones, Jaxon, Benjamin, Jetton. Dwayne is also survived by his companion of 12 years, Mary Koetter. Funeral Service: 11:00am on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana with Phil LaMaster officiating. Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, July 6, 2021 at Collins Funeral Home and after 9:00am on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Collins Funeral Home. Interment will be in Scottsburg Cemetery in Scottsburg, Indiana. In lieu of flowers – St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Austin Alumni Association c/o Collins Funeral Home. The family of Dwayne Ferrell would like to extend their appreciation to the caring and compassionate staff of About Helping Others, LLC and Amedisys Hospice for the excellent care they provided to him.
