Burkett
October 26, 1931 – January 25, 2025
James D. "Jim" Burkett, 93, of Vienna, Indiana passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Norton Scott Hospital in Scottsburg, Indiana. He was born on October 26, 1931, in Ladoga, Indiana, the son of the late Norman Burkett and Emma Olive (Scott) Burkett. After twenty years of service Jim retired as a 1st Class Petty Officer from the United States Navy and served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He also was a former security guard and had worked at several companies which included the old Indiana Army Ammunition Plant, the old Tube Turns, Scott County Detention Center, and Morgan Foods. Jim was a Life member of the Scott County VFW Post # 6582 and a member of the American Legion Post # 89 in Seymour, Indiana. Jim had a strong passion for Indiana University basketball. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and playing cards. Sundays were reserved for his cherished television show featuring David Jeremiah, where he found comfort and inspiration. In addition to his first and second wife, Jane (Crosby) Burkett and Doris (Bridgewater) Burkett he was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Tina VanSpeybroeck; four brothers, Victor, Robert, Herman and Carroll Gene Burkett; and three sisters, Susanna Boomer, Ramona Oaks and Virginia Burkett. Survivors include one daughter, Mary Lou Swanson of Rochester, Indiana; two sons, David John (Ann) Burkett and Paul C. Burkett of Warsaw, Indiana; two stepsons, Steve Parks and Sam Parks; thirteen grandchildren, Dan (Lacy), Matt (Tosha), Madison, Gayle (Nick), Brad, Ben, Ashley (Mike), Sarah (Cody), Kaitlyn (Nate), Victoria, Cara (Joe), Michael (Jennifer) and Samantha (Mark); twenty-two great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Jim Burkett will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 4:00pm at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana. Visitation will be Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm prior to the service at the funeral home. Cremation was entrusted to Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana.
