James F. McClain, 80, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at Scott Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 4, 1939 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of the late Dr. Marvin L. McClain and Harriett (Ford) McClain. Jim graduated from Scottsburg High School in the Class of 1957 and then attended Indiana University in Bloomington where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He transferred and earned his Bachelor's Degree from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C. Jim was a SGT (T) in the U.S. Army and served as a Military Special Agent for the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps. Jim then served as a Calligrapher for Vice-President of the United States, Spiro Agnew, in Washington, D.C., was the Art Director for "Circle Track & Highway" Magazine in Alexandria, Virginia and a former Chemical Lab Technician for Melpar, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia. He then returned to Indiana where he was a professional photographer and owner of McClain Studio of Photography in Scottsburg, Indiana from 1973 until 2007. During that time he was a member of the Scottsburg United Methodist Church in Scottsburg, Indiana, where he had served in many capacities, including Administrative Board Chairman. Jim was very active in his service to his community in both personal and professional realms, from earning his Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America, was former Scottsburg City Councilman at Large, former Chairman for the Scott County Republican Party, past President and charter member of the Scott County Arts Council, past President of the Scottsburg Lions Club, past President and life member of the Professional Photographers of Indiana, past President of the Daguerre Club of Indiana, member of the Professional Photographers of America since 1973 and a Certified Professional Photographer since 1979. In addition, Jim was a member of the Louisville Magic Club, Scottsburg Lodge # 572 F & AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, the Murat Shrine Temple, Oasis of Indianapolis and the past President of the Scottsburg High School Alumni Association. During his lifetime, he was awarded the Indiana Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor's Bowen and Orr and was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Patricia (Hobbs) McClain; two daughters, Shannon Guidry and husband Kevin of Cove, Texas and Ashley Gose and husband David of Scotts, Michigan; four grandchildren, Joshua and Faith Guidry and Ava and Emery Gose. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Mary McClain; a niece, Emily Young and an aunt, Mary Ford. Funeral services will be private for immediate family only due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, CDC recommendations, State and Local government mandates and the family's wishes. A celebration of life will be held with friends and family to be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Scottsburg Cemetery.
