John Alvin Lowry, 83, a loving husband, devoted father, and cherished community member, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on May 17, 2025, at Norton Downtown in Louisville, Kentucky. He was born on July 4, 1941, in Austin, Indiana, to the late Clarence and Katie (Evans) Lowry. John lived a life rich with creativity, compassion, and service. After graduating from Scottsburg Senior High School in 1961, John went on to marry the love of his life, Susan, on July 14, 1962. With a professional career spanning more than decade, John held the position of Head of Maintenance at Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana, where he played a pivotal role in the company's involvement with NASCAR. Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, he garnered respect from colleagues and friends alike. In addition to his work in the diesel engine industry, John was a passionate art teacher at both Unity School and Scottsburg Academy, where he inspired countless students to express their creativity. His ministry extended beyond the classroom, as he served as a chaplain for the Scott County Jail, Scott Memorial Hospital, Churchill Downs, and in his chalk ministry, demonstrating a deep commitment to uplifting those in need. For the past eleven years, John faithfully served as the pastor to seniors at First Christian Church, where he touched the lives of many with his kindness and wisdom. He had an incredible gift for nurturing relationships, always offering a supportive presence to those around him. John's love for life was evident in his enthusiasm for golfing, and he was a proud long-time member of West Wood Golf Course in Scottsburg. His laughter and warmth will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. John was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Thomas Lowry; and one sister, Joyce Broady. John is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Lowry; daughter, Sharon Lowry; two sons, Steven (Patty) Lowry and Jamie (Jennifer) Lowry; four brothers, Eric (Nancy), Terry (Dolores), Kevin, and Brian (Melinda) Lowry; four sisters, Linda McGlothlin, Martha (David) Tellis, Sue (George, Jr.) Lucas, and Katy (Tim) Hutchinson; six grandchildren, David Anthony (Rachael) Parker, Madeline (Evan) Howser, Reese and Andrew Lowry, Stephanie (Jerimiah) Helium, and Shane Turner; and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the First Christian Church of Scottsburg on Friday, May 23, 2025, at 11:00am with Pastor David Carroll officiating. Viewing will take place at Charles E. Meyer Gymnasium on Thursday, May 22, 2025, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. There will also be viewing time on Friday at the church from 10:00am to 11:00am prior to the service. Following the funeral service burial will take place at Scottsburg Cemetery in Scottsburg, Indiana. As we say goodbye to John, we celebrate a life that was truly extraordinary and the many ways he touched our lives. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be missed beyond words.
