Joseph F. Smith, 75, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024, at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on December 19, 1948, in Scottsburg, Indiana, to the late Bruce M. and Helen (Hardy) Smith. On April 29, 1972, he married the love of his life, JoAnn (Robbins) Smith, and she survives.

He was a lifelong farmer and retired in 1999. He was a past volunteer fireman for Vienna Township. Joe was a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Board for twenty-seven years. He also belonged to the Scott County Young Farmers, Fairview Christian Church, and the Scottsburg American Legion #234 for several years.

In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Bridgewater of Scottsburg, Indiana; and a son, Aaron Smith of Scottsburg, Indiana.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, JoAnn; a daughter, Amy Smith-Mills; four grandchildren, Christopher, Caden, Zaley, and Braylin; seven brothers and sisters, Marie Hoffman of New York, Roy Smith of Maine, Danny Smith of Plainfield, Indiana, John Smith of Scottsburg, Indiana, Ellen Phillips of Lexington, Indiana, Harriet Burdin of Sellersburg, Indiana, and Anne Roll of Scottsburg, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at the Scottsburg American Legion from 12:00pm to 4:00pm on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Joe loved his family and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. You could often see him sitting outside Hancocks Drugstore Soda Fountain. He enjoyed drinking coffee with his friends and playing with his dog Bruno, who loved him. He also enjoyed watching farm shows. Joe enjoyed attending church and loved his church family. Cremation was entrusted to Collins Funeral Home.
