Obituary

Lawrence H. (Larry) Fagersten, age 94, passed away on August 10, 2023 in Scottsburg, Indiana. Larry was born on December 11, 1928 in Rochelle Park, New Jersey. His parents, David H. Fagersten and Helga, (nee Mathesen) Fagersten, immigrated from Norway and settled in New Jersey. He was the youngest of five children, and according to the story always told, he weighed 3 lbs at birth, was brought home from the hospital in a shoebox, and kept warm by being placed by a kitchen stove. Larry was a United States Navy Veteran, served on the Leonard F. Mason Destroyer, and spent most of his enlistment in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. After he was discharged from the Navy, he moved to Scottsburg, Indiana in 1948. Larry worked as a radio and TV repairman; maintenance supervisor at Arvin Industries in Columbus, Indiana; an electrician at the American Can Corporation in Austin, Indiana; and as a maintenance foreman at Holm Industries in Scottsburg, Indiana. He retired in 1999 at the age of 70. Larry is survived by his wife, Norma (Amick) Fagersten; sons, Larry E. Fagersten (Paula) of Greenwood, Indiana, Terry Amick (Pam) of Scottsburg, Indiana, and Jeff (Angie) Amick of Lexington, Indiana; daughter, Jill Collins (Donald) of Lexington, Indiana; son-in-law, Larry Boyd of Deputy, Indiana; fifteen grandchildren, Ashley Fagersten, Leslie Kell, Monica Myslinski, Jennifer Sandlin, Joshua Lash, Ashley Collins, Gavin Collins, Mia Collins, Kylie Brooke, Joshua Amick, Elyse Amick, Andrew Amick, Matthew Amick, Donna Carter, and Julia Watts and twelve great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his first wife, Thelma (Kemp) Fagersten; daughters, Vickie Fagersten and Toni Boyd, and son Todd Amick. Larry enjoyed playing golf, spending time with family, playing euchre and helping Norma keep the Leota General Store maintained. Larry was a longtime member of the Scottsburg First Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at Collins Funeral Home on August 13, 2023 at 2:00 pm. A visitation will be held on August 13, 2023 from 11:00 am until time of service at 2:00 pm. In Lieu of Flowers the family requests donations to: Alzheimer's Research Foundation or Dementia Society of America ℅ Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana.
