Obituary

Linda M. Illingworth passed away April 7, 2025, at Indiana University Hospital West in Avon, Indiana at the age of 74. Linda was born to Russel L. Schneider and Norma Jane (Staats) Schneider in Centerville, Indiana on August 6,1950. She graduated from

Centerville High School and went on to Purdue University. While attending Purdue University, she was introduced to K. Stephen (Steve) Illingworth (of Lafayette, IN) by their parents a few months after Steve's return from the Vietnam War. Linda graduated

with a degree from Purdue University and ultimately earned a Masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology from Indiana State University. Linda married Steve in Centerville on March 4, 1972, and shortly thereafter moved to Scottsburg, Indiana. Linda started her speech and language career at Southwestern School district in Hanover, IN about the same time she moved to Scottsburg, and then took a brief hiatus to start a family with Steve. A few years after the birth of their youngest son, she was hired by Scott County School District II and served as the speech and language pathologist for that district until her retirement in 2016. When not helping generations of students with speech and hearing challenges, she was active in the local Psi Iota Xi sorority, the American Martyrs Catholic Church parish, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and lovingly supported her three sons and many others in their Boy Scouts of America activities. Linda was very proud of her three sons achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. As a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church, she served at various times as a member of the Parish Council and Director of Religious Education. Linda loved to travel, especially to or with her family and friends, was an avid reader and fan of classic western movies and television shows (to the point of sometimes driving her oldest son batty about what the Cartwrights were doing when they would go to Stockton). She loved telling everyone about her granddaughter, Kenna, and was very proud of Kenna's academic achievements and enthusiastically supported Kenna's art, music, and theater extra-curricular activities.  Linda is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her three sons, Jeff (and Gina) of Camino, California, Jarred (and Laura) of Brownsburg, Indiana, and Jason (and Melissa) of Manhattan, Kansas. She is also survived by her granddaughter Kenna of Brownsburg.  A visitation is scheduled from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, Scottsburg, Indiana, with a Rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2025. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 26th at American Martyrs Catholic Church (also in Scottsburg) with burial to follow at Scottsburg Cemetery. The family asks that in lieu of flowers or gifts, donations be made to either the Scott County YMCA (https://www.scfy.org/giving) where Linda was an active member and had many friends or to the Rheumatology Research Foundation (https://www.rheumresearch.org/) to help their research for a cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis, which Linda fought for nearly forty years.
