Lucile Elizabeth Monroe Hopper, 104, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Norton Scott Hospital in Scottsburg, Indiana. She was born on September 8, 1919, in Memphis, Indiana, the daughter of the late Charles M. Spurgeon and Emma Ruth (Parr) Spurgeon Satterwhite. Lucile graduated from Crothersville High School in the Class of 1941. She held the record for being the oldest living alumna. Lucile was a member of the former Zion United Methodist Church. She was a retired employee of Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana, and had worked at the shoe factory in Crothersville, Indiana. Lucile also worked at Morgan Foods in Austin, Indiana, as a young girl. Lucile always led a very active lifestyle, being involved in the International Association of Rebekah Assemblies (IARA), was an avid quilter, and was a prolific traveler and baker, renowned especially for her pies. It was well known that Lucile enjoyed dancing, going to the senior centers, and antiquing. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Earle Satterwhite; first husband and father of her children, Henry J. Monroe; second husband, Virgil Hopper; son, Donald "Don" Monroe; four sisters, Mary Alice (Spurgeon) Harris, Mildred (Satterwhite) Peak, Virginia (Satterwhite) Fitzgibbon, and Marie (Satterwhite) Adams; two brothers, Robert and Ralph Satterwhite; two daughters-in-law, Nora (Umphress) Monroe and Patty (Ashabraner) Monroe; and granddaughter-in-law, Janet (Clem) Monroe. Survivors include a son, David (Nancy) Monroe of Commiskey, Indiana; sister-in-law, Hildegard Satterwhite; ten grandchildren, Gayla (John) Albright, Michael H. Monroe, Elizabeth C.(Dale) Risen, Lindajo Howard, Denise (Ronne) McNew, and Martie (Brent) Miller, Mark David Monroe, Kathy Combs, Cody Fague, and Shane Fague; ten great-grandchildren, Joshua, Genesis, Rachel, Michael, Alex, Hannah, Kristi, Kathryn, Grace, and Adin; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who adored her. Funeral service: noon, Saturday, January 20, 2024, at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana, with Pastor David Schill officiating. Visitation 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
