Obituary

Marvin C. (Bud) Carter passed away peacefully at his home on November 21, 2023 at the age of 88. He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Carter, sister Sue Jones of Scottsburg and his six children and their families – Jeff Carter (Beth) of Coppell, Texas, John Carter of Scottsburg, Leslie Prall (Mark) of Carmel, Indiana, Jaime Norton (Linda) of Scottsburg, Jill Crouse (Jim) of Indianapolis, Indiana and Stephanie Atha (Mike) of Scottsburg. Bud was known as Pap, Pop Pop, Buddy and B.B. to his twelve beloved grandchildren – Caroline and Catherine Carter, Anna and Luke Prall, Symantha and Mackenzie Norton, Cole Atha, Kyle and Kayla Crouse, Jessie Norton, Anna Weist and Abby Weist. Bud took immense pride and joy watching each of them grow up and he was and will continue to be a tremendous influence in each of their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lance and Edna Carter and wife Jo Carter.

A lifelong educator after receiving his teaching degree from Indiana State University, Bud served the Scott County School District 2 school system for over forty years in various teaching, administration and coaching capacities at Vienna Elementary School, Johnson Elementary School, Scottsburg Elementary School and Scottsburg High School. He treated each student or athlete playing for him like they were his own child and that trait and mindset endears him today in so many of the lives he touched during his time as an educator and coach. Bud loved his country and proudly served in the Indiana National Guard.

Bud took a great deal of pride in Scottsburg and was active throughout the community over the course of his life. He was a faithful member of First Christian Church serving as a deacon and elder and always wanted people to know and trust in God. He served the Lions Club in various leadership capacities for over twenty five years and his son John continues this service now with the local Lions Club chapter. He also coached the Lions Club sponsored Little League baseball team for over twenty years helping establish the Little League program in Scottsburg to what it is today. His catch phrase from the dugout "Don't Get Your Dobber Down" continues to bring smiles to everyone who played for Bud on his Lions baseball teams. Bud was recognized with various awards and accolades during his life of service and giving back to others. Being recognized with the Good Citizen award from the Scottsburg Historical Society embodies what Bud meant to Scottsburg and Scott County.

Bud loved to travel and also enjoy a nice meal with family and friends whenever the opportunity presented itself. He loved the sand between his toes on the beaches of the Florida panhandle and South Carolina and was an avid golfer and fisherman who loved the outdoors throughout his life. In his later years, a highlight of Bud and Marilyn's week was the Sunday evening cornhole game and camaraderie with their Magnolia Drive friends.

Faith, Family and Friends were the bedrock of Bud's life and through his positive mindset he was an inspiration, trusted friend and mentor to everyone he spent time with, especially during some of his biggest life challenges.

Simply put, Bud was a great man and a gentleman to the day he departed to heaven. He will be missed but never forgotten and his family and friends are thankful he has been and will continue to be an important part of our lives.

To celebrate Bud's life, visitation will be held at First Christian Church in Scottsburg from 4:00 – 7:00 on Friday, December 1 and a celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, December 2 at First Christian Church with visitation that day from 10:00 – 10:45. Cremation was entrusted to Collins Funeral Home with interment at later day in Scottsburg Cemetery in Scottsburg, Indiana.

Given Bud's commitment to faith and education, in lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial contribution in Bud's honor to First Christian Church and the Scottsburg Educational Loan Fund at Scottsburg High School in c/o Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana.
