Marvin Dale Sandlin, 83, of Scottsburg, Indiana, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed from this life on June 17, 2026. He was born on July 31, 1942, in Scottsburg, Indiana, to the late Roy J Sandlin and Maude (Bowling) Sandlin.
Born to farmers, some of Marvin’s earliest memories were around corn, bean, and tobacco farming. He listened on the radio to Kentucky Wildcats basketball games and New York Giants baseball games. He would make up scorekeeping sheets that he and his sister, Shirley, would fill out while they listened. He attended Scaffold Lick Baptist Church from the first week of his birth and was baptized there at six years old.
Marvin attended Blocher School – a two-room schoolhouse – for first through eighth grade. He was bright and, because there were only two classes, he was accelerated and ended up graduating from Scottsburg Senior High School at age 16. At barely 17, he went away to Campbellsville College in Campbellsville, KY. It took more years than usual for him to finish his degree, but he eventually received a Bachelor’s Degree in business.
In between semesters at Campbellsville, Marvin worked at the Sandlin Standard Oil Station that his dad owned. Working with his dad, task variety, and all of the social interactions made it one of his favorite jobs. He was trained as a technician and worked for AT&T as a lineman, making lifetime memories with his coworkers. Church league softball and NASCAR races filled his social calendar in his bachelor years.
Teaching Sunday School class at Scaffold Lick Baptist Church, a beautiful college-aged woman attending his Sunday School class caught his eye. He attended her college graduation and when she walked across campus he knew she was the only woman for him. He and Pam married December 18, 1982.
When he married Pam, and then when their daughter Jaime and their son Jess were born, Marvin felt like his real life started. He began attending the Louisville Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and pastored Clearspring Baptist Church in Clearspring, Indiana.
He would then go on to work at the Scott County Workforce Center. With his team, he saw the unemployment rate in the county drop and helped many people in the community find work. With Experience Works, Marvin helped place senior citizens in part-time jobs and loved the friendships he built with those people.
A devoted father, Marvin attended every sporting event and school activity of Jaime and Jessee’s. When they moved away from home, he crossed states and continents to be with them and to go on vacation with them.
From the time of his retirement in 2004, Marvin focused on volunteering and mentoring. He was a listening ear to men in leadership. For over a decade, Marvin made a meaningful impact as a board member for New Life International Ministries. He was a devoted member of the Scottsburg First Christian Church where he served as Missions Pastor.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Pam; his son, Jessee Sandlin; his daughter, Jaime Sandlin; one sister, Shirley Sandlin; and her children Kori Williams and Brent Gilfedder.
