Michael D. Stearns, 77, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Thursday, August 24, 2023, at his residence with loved ones by his side. He was born on March 24, 1946, in Scottsburg, Indiana, the son of the late Isaac Leon Stearns Sr., and Cecelia (Amick) Stearns. Mike was a member of First Christian Church in Scottsburg, Indiana. He loved participating in local community events. Mike started his career at his father's sawmill when he was in middle school. After graduating he went on to work at H.H. Schierich Cabinet Makers in Louisville, Kentucky. He did not enjoy the long distance to Louisville, so he found work closer to home at the Scottsburg Branch Coca-Cola. Mike owned and operated his bulldozer, building ponds, waterways and preparing land for home construction. He retired from Allied Ready Mix working as an equipment operator in 2006. After retirement, Mike drove a school bus for Scott County School District #2. He never missed a day and took great pride in that. In his free time, Mike was a volunteer firefighter at Lexington Fire Department in Lexington, Indiana. He enjoyed being outside golfing, gardening and working on their home. On April 8, 1995, he married Nancy (Flynn) Stearns at the First Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel Elias Stearns; and sister, Leona Phillips. Mike is survived by his wife, Nancy (Flynn) Stearns, four sons, Michael David Stearns Jr. of Scottsburg, Indiana, Larry Wayne Stearns of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Royal (Candace) Myers of Scottsburg, Indiana; and John Myers of Indianapolis, Indiana, and one daughter, Laura Thurman of Little York, Indiana; one brother, Isaac (Regina) Stearns of Scottsburg, Indiana; two sisters, Edna (Mac) McKinney of Scottsburg, Indiana and Kay (Don) White of Pleasant, Indiana. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael Kelly (Mariah) Stearns, Shane Prince, Andie Myers, and Clancy Myers; and two great grandchildren, Violet and Xavier Stearns. Funeral Service: 10:00 am Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana Visitation: 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, August 28, 2023 and after 9:00 am Tuesday at Collins Funeral Home.
