Norman "Sonny" Russell Barnett, 88, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021 at his residence with his wife by his side. He was born on June 9, 1933 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of the late Scott Martin and Fanny Mae (McDaniels) Barnett. On February 26, 1965 he married Shirlee (Gumm) Barnett, who survives. Sonny was a Private First Class during the Korean War. He was a lifetime Veteran member of the VFW belonging to the Jeffersonville Post #1832 for more than twenty years, and the Charlestown Post #1427 for many years also. He was incredibly involved with the VFW helping organize the special events and holiday celebrations. Sonny also was a member of the Color Guard for more than fourteen years. Before working at the different VFWs, Sonny worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Henryville Forestry, and worked for Sellersburg Stone. He was also very well known for working as a Walmart greeter for almost four years. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers; and one sister. In addition to his wife, Sonny is survived by daughter, Barbara "Punkin" Stettenbenz of Otisco, Indiana; son, Russell Scott (Heather) Barnett of Franklin, Indiana; two stepsons, Denver "Buddy" (Teresa) Hardwick of Midland, Texas and Lenny Hardwick of Corydon, Indiana; brother, George Robert Barnett of Salem, Indiana; sister, Mildred Logdon of Jeffersonville, Indiana; five grandchildren, Amber, Ash'lee, Ean, Amy Nicole; four great grandchildren, Ella, Eva, Emma, and Parker; thirty-one nieces and seven nephews. There will be a celebration of life service for Sonny at the VFW Post #1832 on Friday, November 12, 2021 at 1:00 pm, 1101 S Clark Blvd, Clarksville, IN 47129. Cremation services were entrusted to Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana. In Lieu of Flowers the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association, VFW Post 1427 & 1832, or to the family for the funeral arrangements.
