DIVISH, PATRICIA ANN DOLAN, age 80, died peacefully at home on Nov. 15, 2021.
Born in Stratford, N.J., on Jan. 29, 1941, as the sixth child of an Irish immigrant, linen-broker father Eugene and a resourceful mother Eleanor, Pat learned to appreciate quality sheets with a high thread count and the skills to weather difficult times. Her decision to meet life with laughter and generosity was all her own.
After graduating from Camden (N. J.) Catholic High School, Pat attended Drexel University with hopes of working in the FBI crime lab. She dropped out in 1960 and instead traveled solo by bus and by train to the West Coast. After six months, she returned East to begin a career as a fashion buyer at Wanamaker's in downtown Philadelphia.
Pat met William "Bill" Divish on a blind date and they married on May 18, 1963. They had five children in quick succession, took a break to pack up and move to Indiana, and then had two more before landing in Scottsburg, Ind. Bill lost a cancer battle a few years later, leaving Pat a single mother of seven children ages 2 to 17, when Scottsburg and the people of American Martyrs Catholic Church stepped in, offering more turkeys and sauerkraut than one family – albeit a large one – could ever eat.
Pat worked for Scottsburg City Hall for 20 years in a job that allowed her to know people by name – by and account number. In her retirement, Pat continued working bingo at the Knights of Columbus, ushered theater productions at the Kentucky Center for the Arts and organized the local Road to Recovery chapter of the American Cancer Society.
She enjoyed mystery novels and British mystery television. She liked chocolate candy, crab cakes, Scotch and good coffee. She could strike up a conversation with almost anyone but rarely answered her cell phone. She preferred Diane Sawyer to Katie Couric, thought Sean Connery was the best Bond and that Grace Kelly (who she thought of as a "hometown girl") was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. Most of all, she loved her week each summer in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., doing crafts with the grandchildren, collecting shells, catching crabs and playing board games. She earned a reputation with the Ocean Isle Beach police due to some water balloon and Chinese lantern-related mishaps.
Pat is now reunited with her beloved husband Bill after 40 years apart. She was predeceased by her older sister, Eileen, and one older brother, Jim. She is survived by brothers Gene, Paul and Tom; and by her children daughter Margaret (Edward McMillan) and grandchildren Ryan and Ian; daughter Julie (Michael) McClellan and grandchildren Logan (Robert Eshelmann), Brianna, Emily (David) Griffith and great-grandchildren Eli and Lucy; daughter Barbara and grandchildren Owen and Will; son Bill (Cherie) Divish and grandchildren Abbie, Carley, Ella and Kayla); Edward (Jen) Divish and grandchildren Nicole and Michelle; daughter Carolyn (Leon Waninger) and grandchildren Eileen, Teddy and Maeve; and son Chris Divish.
There will be a viewing from 4-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, at Collins Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, at noon at American Martyrs with a celebration of life to follow at American Martyrs Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions can be made to American Martyrs Catholic Church.
