IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sydney Dian
Comer Chasteen
September 20, 1990 – May 4, 2023
Sydney Dian Comer Chasteen, 32, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Hosparus Health Inpatient Care Center in Louisville, KY with her parents by her side. She was born on September 20,1990 at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Sydney is the daughter of Monty and Paige Comer and considered to be the most perfect of imperfect miracles. Sydney was a 2009 graduate of Scottsburg High School, and went on to earn a bachelor's of science degree in journalism and creative writing from Ball State University in 2014. Her passion for disability rights and advocacy was ignited while at Ball State University as an active member of the Disabled Students in Action. 2014 turned out to be a big year for Sydney. After graduation from Ball State University, she married Nathan Chasteen and began her wedded life. Sydney and Nathan remained married until her passing. Sydney was preceded in death by her grandfather, Barry Comer. She is already missed terribly by the surviving members of her family, including her mother and father, Monty and Paige Comer of Scottsburg, her sister, Jordan Powell (Drew) of St. Cloud, her brother, Isaac Comer (Macy) of Scottsburg, her grandparents, Randel and Dian Kessler of Scottsburg, her grandmother, Lois Comer of Scottsburg, her husband, Nathan Chasteen of Scottsburg, her brother-in-law Chris Chasteen (Jessie) of Scottsburg, sister-in-law, Amanda Callahan (Scottie) of Scottsburg, her Mother and father-in-law, Atlanta and Tim Meeks of Scottsburg, her father-in-law Travis Chasteen of Scottsburg. Additionally, she will be missed by her many aunts, uncles, cousins, and nieces. Nearly every day of Sydney's life was met with challenges. Most challenges she embraced with a smile and a determined spirit. Sydney was the type of friend we would all be lucky to have. Unfortunately, she was not able to take care of herself and her own mental health in the same way in which she encouraged others to do and suffered because of it. "We, the ones who are challenged, need to be heard. To be seen not as a disability, but as a person who has, and will continue to bloom. To be seen not only as a handicap, but as a well intact human being." Robert M. Hensel. In honor of Sydney, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Spina Bifida Association ℅ Collins Funeral Home. The Comer family will be holding a Celebration of Life for Sydney at a later date this month. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at The Rock located at 750 S. Gardner St. Scottsburg, Indiana. The celebration will begin at 1:00pm.
