Sylvia Joan Smith, 86, of Scottsburg, Indiana passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on March 5, 1935 in Hammond, Indiana, the daughter of the late Richard and Agnes (Hansen) Roberts. Sylvia graduated from high school in Hammond, Indiana, then went on to receive an associates degree in women's studies from Purdue University. She retired from Scottsburg School District #2 as a title one tutor. After retirement she volunteered at Twice Told Tales in Scottsburg, Indiana and was a member of the Friends of The Library book club. Sylvia was an avid reader who also enjoyed knitting and doing puzzles. In addition to her parents, Sylvia is preceded in death by her son, James Allen Smith, and one daughter, Elizabeth "Beth" Smith; and four sisters, Myrtle Koerner, Casey Blink, Willie Dupree, and Joy Roberts. Survivors include husband, James "Jim" Smith; son, Richard "Rich" (Mary) Smith of Scottsburg, Indiana; two daughters, April (Tom) Barr of Nashville, Indiana and Sharon (Brad) Huddle of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren, Matt Barr, Andrea Pisano, Alex Smith, Emily Smith, and Katherine Parker; four great grandchildren, Justin and Micah Pisano, Bennett Smith, and Charlotte Parker. Funeral Service 5:00 pm Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana with Rev. Don Summerfield officiating. Visitation 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm Wednesday at Collins Funeral Home. Cremation services were entrusted to Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana and private burial will be at a later date.
