Obituary

Thomas E. Vance, 90, of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Baptist Health Floyd Hospital in New Albany, Indiana. He was born on March 7, 1930 in Darby, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George Francis Vance and Anna (Stransky) Vance. Tom attended high school in Darby, Pennsylvania and Community College in Barstow, California. On Aug. 22, 1951, he married Nina R. (Chasteen) Vance and they would have been married 70 years this year. Tom retired after 21 years as a Master Sergeant from the United States Marine Corp. serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He had numerous other jobs following his retirement. Tom was a former employee of the old Charlestown Powder Plant, the old Borg Warner Company and Scott Manufacturing Company. He also served as the Deputy State Fire Marshall for 19 years, was a loan officer for the Scottsburg Building & Loan Association and worked as a bagger for the Jay C Food Store. The children at the store always referred to him as the "Donald Duck" man. Tom was a member of the Scottsburg United Methodist Church, was a 50 year and 32nd Degree member of the Scottsburgh Lodge # 572 F & AM and a member of the American Legion Post # 234 in Scottsburg, Indiana. He collected several different and unique items over the years including a stamp collection he had since he was a child, trains, airplanes and Donald Duck Memorabilia. Tom loved talking about airplanes and would often see a plane and tell a story of an experience he had on that airplane. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and William Vance. Survivors include his wife, Nina R. Vance; two daughters, Pamela Priddy (Rodney Burt) of Charlestown, Indiana and Jan A. Vance of Muncie, Indiana; three brothers, Robert Vance of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Noel Vance (Roxanne) and Ronald Vance (Denise) all of Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Sean Evans (Jennifer) and Allison Hoskins (Derek) and eight great grandchildren, Claire, Alex, Skye, Asher, Cassian, Cooper, Rhys and Brynn. Graveside Service: 3:00 pm on Friday, February 12, 2021 at Scottsburg Cemetery with Evangelist Burt Priddy officiating.
